I think that if were DS were created today, your observations would be much more accurate than they are looking back. You have to remember that despite DS's many different timelines, the show was created with a 1960's mentality and infused into the storylines the social structures of the day (men ALWAYS topped women then). The one strong female in the series, Angelique, was always seen as an evil outcast. One could argue that Elizabeth Stoddard was a strong woman, however, she was often overruled by Roger Collins and had the misfortune to have married Paul Stoddard, a creep that dumped her.

(Incidentally, I read "Angelique's Descent" about her youth in Haiti and it was pretty good.)

But don't you think the homoerotics are limited to male-on-male interactions? The more I watch, the more I see an descending scale of sadomasochistic dynamics, with Barnabas on top (no surprise): Barnabas doms Willie, who doms Maggie (even as he insists "I'm tryin' ta help ya!"), and, occasionally, David, who in turn belittles and doms Sarah. The homoerotic SM dynamic seems to initiate the branching off into other SM relations, but it slides right over (or starts short upon) the ladies --you think?

so a friend and i just watched a few episodes on dvd from collection 1, and WOW are there some highly suggestive scenes between willy and jason, and by extension between willy and barnabus, and/or willy, jason, and barnabus. now, as my friend so insightfully pointed out, there's a rich history of homoerotics in vampire narratives more generally, but i'm wondering what anybody else thinks. have you noticed homoerotic tensions or subplots in DS?
